Cleaning House: Bathroom Edition

The bathroom is one of the most high-traffic places in your home. It’s where you can freshen up and get your day started with a morning routine, and where you can wind down at night with a nice long bath or shower.

For all the wear and tear and daily use it gets, your “throne” room deserves the best. Cleaning the bathroom is a dreaded chore for most families.

After all, it’s a place where some pretty icky things happen and where grime and clutter can accumulate quickly. It is such an important room to keep clean, though!

Scrub Away!

We’ve put together a list of necessary cleaning for your bathroom, along with some tips on how to be efficient and make it less of a daunting chore.

The Importance of a Clean Bathroom

As we stated before, the bathroom receives a lot of visitors every day. That means multiple people are spending time using and touching different items and surfaces, making it easy for germs and bacteria to spread.

To add to that spread, every time your toilet is flushed, particles of the contents within are flung out onto nearby surfaces. Additionally, unclean bathrooms are extremely susceptible to mold because of excess moisture.

Mold, mildew, bacteria, and other microorganisms can cause:

  • Stomach viruses like salmonella and norovirus
  • Fungi viruses like athletes foot or staph
  • Respiratory issues like strep throat

Keeping these things at bay is important and it’s why we highly recommend keeping a tidy bathroom.

Daily Cleaning

There are a couple of cleaning tasks that we recommend you do daily that are pretty simple and could be done by anyone in the family.

Wipe Downs

From handwashing to teeth brushing, counters and fixtures see a lot of spillages every day. Do your best to wipe them down as you see them.

Shower/Bath Care

While you may not need to give the shower and tub a deep clean every day, it’s still a good idea to keep a squeegee handy so you can break up excess water accumulation that can lead to mold. It’s also a good idea to close the shower curtain after you get out so it can fully dry.

Weekly Cleaning

Now we’re onto the tasks the family should do at least once a week. While this may be a longer list, remember you don’t need to accomplish it all in one single day! Spread it out amongst family members and days of the week to make it more achievable.

Towels and Mats

Save a laundry basket for the bathroom because a weekly load is important. Your towels and bathmats are constantly being exposed to water and other bathroom drips and bacteria, so washing them as often as possible is recommended.

Shower, Tub, Sink

Soap scum, mildew, dirty grout, and toothpaste build-up can quickly get out of hand. Give your shower/bath a good scrub with your favorite all-purpose cleaner. Don’t forget the walls and shower curtain!

Use the same cleaning solution, or baking soda and vinegar, to wipe stains out of the sink.

Toilet

Most bathroom business is done on the toilet, so it should be kept very clean. Wipe down the outside, including the tank, base, and lid, before moving to the bowl. Keep in mind that while automatic cleaners are more convenient, the chemicals used can erode your commode over time and cause more problems.

Stick with a toilet cleaner and brush and get up in there! Once you’ve wiped everything down, including the surrounding surfaces, it’s time to disinfect.

This is how we will get rid of all the bacteria and microorganisms we’d like to keep off our hands.

Others

There are a few other items to clean that can often get overlooked, so we wanted to include them.

Once a week, be sure to clean:

  • Mirrors
  • Light switches
  • Doorknobs
  • Floors
  • Toothbrush holder

Getting all of these will make a huge difference in your bathroom’s cleanliness.
